Description: Near-Earth asteroid 2012 BX34 is seen passing in front of galaxies in the constellation Virgo, just 4.5 hours before making it's closest approach to Earth. It missed Earth by 60,000 km (37,000 miles) on Jan 27, 2012 at 15:15 UT (10:15 am EST).The asteroid is 8-16 meters across, and would have disintegrated in the atmosphere if it had come that close. The asteroid appears as a streak due to its rate.- Alex R. Gibbs/Catalina Sky Survey/University of Arizona/NASA.
