Description: Woodcutters and ‘Golpata’ or Nipa palm collectors of Sundarbans are generally called ‘Bawali’. They are one of the major dependents of Sundarbans. For a period of 2-3 months from early January to March, the bawalis collect Nipa palm (Nypa fruticans) or Golpata, which is used for making roofs and mats. During this period the bawalis live in their large boats name Golpata Boat or Goina Nouka. A part of the boat is used as the kitchen. Saline river water is used for washing but sweet water
