Description:
According to the official statistics of the Pakistani government, more than one lakh individuals in the country are affected by diseases caused by smoking,
resulting in 298 deaths every day.

Experts suggest that the tobacco industry is targeting young people to create regular smokers, so that they can replace those who quit smoking.
The mentioned approach of the tobacco industry is very old, and the most important organization of the United Nations, the World Health Organization (WHO),
was established in 1948, and immediately after that, the tobacco industry came under scrutiny. In the 1950s, major players in the tobacco industry
established their influence in the World Health Organization. They established organizations that the WHO used, and secretly provided experts to the
organization who apparently worked for the WHO, but actually protected the interests of the tobacco industry.
Former Swiss Health Minister Thomas Zeltner had revealed such revelations. It is astonishing that scientific experts work simultaneously for major players in the
tobacco industry and the World Health Organization. An example of this is a toxicology expert who was a consultant to the WHO
at a time when there was a global campaign against tobacco use. On the other hand, they were also receiving a salary from a multinational cigarette manufacturing
and selling company like Philip Morris. Then there came a time when these connections became apparent to people. Despite this,
they continued to work as a consultant for the World Health Organization. There are such exemplary examples where scientific experts worked against the objectives
and purposes of international health organizations. When the World Health Organization runs campaigns to promote the health of people,
it is estimated what will be the health of the people?

According to an estimate, there are a billion cigarette smokers in the world, who smoke 18 billion cigarettes daily.
Experts consider it the most profitable business in the world. Eighty percent of the cigarette smokers in the world belong to lower and middle-class societies.
Thirty-three million people work in tobacco fields. A large number of these workers come from extremely poor areas and classes.
Laborers include small children who work for very low wages, but the views of those who struggle against child labor do not focus on these children.

Awareness about diseases caused by smoking is not being created. It is strange that China is the number one tobacco-producing country,
where only 38% of people know that smoking also causes heart diseases, and only 27% know that smokers eventually suffer heart attacks.
Similarly, only 25% of the population in Bangladesh, India, the Netherlands, Russia, Thailand, and Vietnam are aware of these facts.
In New Zealand, 17%, in France 14%, and in the United States 13% of people are unaware of this fact.
You will be surprised to know that heart diseases are the biggest killer of humans in the wo

Over a 40-year collecting period he bought over 20 artworks spanning the artist’s career, far more than any other UK collector.

By bringing these together with loans from The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, British Museum, The Courtauld, National Museums Liverpool Walker Art Gallery, Museums Northumberland, The National Gallery London, Tate, V&A, Amgueddfa Cymru Museum Wales, Hugh Lane Gallery Dublin, The Hunterian, National Galleries of Scotland and Musée d’Orsay, Paris, Discovering Degas provides an important opportunity to better understand Degas and a unique introduction and fresh perspective on a hugely popular art movement.

Loans are supported by the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund. Created by the Garfield Weston Foundation and Art Fund, the Weston Loan Programme is the first ever UK-wide funding scheme to enable smaller and local authority museums to borrow works of art and artefacts from national collections.

Pippa Stephenson-Sit, Curator of European Art at Glasgow Life Museums, who co-curated the exhibition, said: “Discovering Degas has been an absolute joy to work on. Degas is one of the finest artists the world has ever seen and one of the founding artists of the Impressionist group.

“He was very fond of Britain and travelled here several times. He cultivated relationships and recognised opportunities for selling his work to British art collectors, who were beginning to develop a taste for modern French art. Sir William had a keen eye for his artworks and collected them for about forty years.

“From modern Parisian life, to horse-racing, to ballet scenes, Degas tirelessly tackled a number of fascinating topics in a way that was entirely his own. His artworks remain extremely popular today, particularly his ballet scenes, but we hope this exhibition offers a chance to learn something new about an intriguing, immensely talented artist. This is a unique opportunity to vi

In little more than 25 years – so the theory goes at least – one-quarter of the country’s electricity needs will come via homegrown nuclear power. Given the chequered history of attempts to bring through new nuclear, reaching that target by 2050 from the current 15 per cent looks ambitious.
But one place central to turning those aspirations into reality is the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in South Yorkshire, which sits on land which was once part of Orgreave Colliery.

The facility has been used since 2012 as a base for researchers to test and develop millions of pounds worth of manufacturing innovations for the nuclear industry.

It mostly takes place in a giant open-plan workshop with offices on the top floor which overlook the hive of activity taking place below. It is in these offices where The Yorkshire Post is meeting CEO Andrew Storer.

In the earlier part of his career, Storer, originally from Derby, worked his way up through the ranks at Rolls-Royce to become part of their team tasked with setting up a civil nuclear business.

An initial political push in the early 2010s to find sites around the country for new nuclear power stations – a key factor in the initial establishment of the Nuclear AMRC which had Rolls-Royce as its lead industrial partner – ultimately fizzled out, partly as a consequence of concerns about the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan affecting investment decisions.

Storer joined the University of Sheffield-owned Nuclear AMRC in 2015 and was determined to find a viable future for the centre despite the altered political landscape.

It opened up to the nuclear decommissioning market, as well as defence and fusion reactors. The centre also established a supply chain programme called Fit For Nuclear.

Businesses involved in the programme have gone on to win more than £2bn worth of government contracts, safeguarding thousands of jobs.

The centre is also part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, a national network of seven specialist industry-focused research centres designed to help turn academic inventions into commercially-viable products.

In early 2022 following meetings with industry figures including Storer, Boris Johnson announced the launch of a new body called Great British Nuclear in a renewed attempt to bring forward projects.

Last week, the Government announced the start of talks with international firms about building a third major new nuclear plant at Wylfa in Anglesey which it is hoped could be similar in scale to also-planned schemes at Sizewell in Suffolk and Hinkley in Somerset. The latter is already under construction but may not open until the early 2030s.

In parallel to the large-scale plans, the UK is also pinning its hopes on what are known as small modular reactors (SMRs) which can be made in factories and involve a cheaper and quicker construction process. It is hoped they could be operational in this country by the mid-2030s.
