_sacrilege39-traditional-tenby-queen-victoria-red-postbox-blacked-out.jpg "Tenby train station, is one of the busiest in West Wales during the summer season, however it appears that its platform postbox was not so well used by pictured postcard writers, and as such, has been taken out of use by Royal Mail, and repainted black to signify so.<br/>John Perrett who took over station adoption duties at the seaside town five years ago, volunteering to offer his help after finding that he had more and more complaining to do to rail authorities about the poor appearance of the facility - many holidaymakers’ first impression of the resort - has been left, like many others, disgruntled that the traditional wall mounted red post box which has VR on it, denoting that Queen Victoria was monarch when its was installed, has been repainted black.<br/>“I’m disappointed and annoyed that the post box on Tenby station has recently been taken out of use. As far as I know there was no consultation and as it's a listed building I am surprised it's been allowed,” said John.<br/>“They could have blocked it up and painted the block red so it would blend in.<br/>“I’ve used it numerous times over the last few years. It's only been blocked off in the last month.”<br/>However, one local postie said that she believed that it had been decommissioned due to its lack of use and also lack of maintenance to keep it functional.<br/>“I’ve collected from that box every day for the last year or so, but I’ve collected one postcard!” said Anto O'Hara, responding to a post on Facebook about the matter.<br/>“The door is cracked on the inside and is pinned together with screws. It got to a stage that I couldn’t open the door hence why it has been decommissioned.”<br/>This was backed up by former local postman Martin Vickery who commented: “As a former postie who collected from it for years, we were lucky to get more than a couple of letters a week, and some times none at all, but it should be red like other boxes which are out of use.<br/>“Shame they did not paint the station at the same time!”<br/>One person responding however, called Royal Mail’s actions ‘sacrilege’.<br/>“Should have just been blocked up - that's sacrilege, especially with it being a queen Victoria one!” they remarked.<br/>Other locals admitted that they didn’t even know that a post box was located there; whilst many criticised Network Mail’s continued lack of upkeep at the station, labelling it a ‘filthy rubbish strewn embarrassment’ rather than the ‘pretty, inviting station’ it used to be.<br/>Sharing feedback she’d receieved after raising the matter with the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, County councillor for Tenby’s south ward Cllr Sam Skyrme Blackhall said: “Royal Mail typically paint listed boxes black when decommissioned. The box is included in the listing for the station.”<br/>Senedd Member for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, Sam Kurtz said it was ‘disappointing’ and vowed to write to Royal Mail.<br/>")

_tenby-rnli-lifeboat-crew-joined-by-mumbles-for-coxswain-training.jpg "Tenby RNLI lifeboat crew volunteers were joined by members of the Mumbles crew for Coxswain training this week.<br/>Tenby’s all-weather lifeboat the Haydn Miller launched at 9am on Monday (May 20), for coxswain training, with Mumbles lifeboat joining the Tenby station from 11am onwards. <br/>The area of the exercise consisted of the Tenby and Saundersfoot areas, so there was a good chance for lifeboat ‘spotters’ to see the vessels out and about, during another sunny along the coast.<br/>It was the end of an era at the Tenby station this month - as Coxswain Phil John stepped down after 30 years as a crew member (14 of those as Coxswain).<br/>Phil handed over his pager on Friday, May 17 to fellow crew member Dan Young, who will be standing in until a full-time replacement Coxswain is appointed and will be supported by the other deputy Coxswains.")

_special-beacon-lighting-ceremony-lined-up-in-tenby-to-mark-80th-anniversary-of-the-d-day-landings.jpg "Plans are in hand for Tenby to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings with a special beacon lighting ceremony on Castle Hill.<br/>Instead of lighting beacons to mark his Coronation last year, His Majesty, The King requested that they be lit on Thursday, June 6, 2024 to mark the anniversary of Operation Overlord.<br/>A similar beacon lighting ceremony took place at the seaside town for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee back in June of 2022.<br/>The largest naval, air and land operation in history, the World War Two landings at Normandy in 1944 saw the opening of Europe’s Second Front which would eventually lead to the downfall of Hitler’s Nazi regime 11 months later.<br/>Mayor of Tenby, Cllr. Dai Morgan, fellow councillors, representatives of Tenby Royal British Legion and local cadet units, will leave Castle Square at The Harbour at approximately 8.50pm on June 6 to process up to Castle Hill.<br/>There, following the reading of the International D-Day Tribute, Cllr. Morgan will light Tenby’s beacon to form part of a UK wide chain of Beacons and Lamp Lights of Peace at 9.15pm.<br/>All are welcome to join in at this commemoration.<br/>Earlier in the day, at 11am, the Mayor will also lay a wreath at the town’s War Memorial in remembrance of all those who gave their lives during the Landings.")

_watch-protestors-39paddle-out39-for-pembrokeshire-peoples-rights-to-clean-water.jpg "Crowds of protestors made up of surfers, cold water swimmers, kayakers, paddle boarders, coasteering companies, divers, lifeguards, and regular beach-going families took to a Pembrokeshire beach on a sunny weekend this month, with the message of ‘enough is enough, cut the crap!’<br/>As part of the national ‘Surfers Against Sewage’ Paddle Out Protests, campaigners took to the sea at Broad Haven beach on Saturday, May 18 demonstrating to the Government, along with water companies such as Dŵr Cymru, and regulators like Natural Resources Wales the will to stand up for people’s rights to clean water, and that those rightly concerned will not stop until there’s an end to sewage pollution.<br/>Broad Haven Buccaneers surf lifesaving club who were a part of the protests, along with local Blue Tit Chill Swimmers, revealed that the group were forced to cancel four beach lifesaving training days last summer due to sewage pollution.<br/>Also on hand to address the crowds was Pembrokeshire mother Jayne Etherington who offered a stark warning after her daughter Caitlin became seriously ill after becoming infected with e-coli following a swim in the sea at Amroth one August morning, at the height of summer!<br/>With such pollution threatening people’s health, Jayne told the crowd of campiagners: “This is about life and death! It’s about time something changed.”<br/>At the start of the week, the Wales Coast Award winners for 2024 were announced, spotlighting coastal sites achieving supposed ‘high standards’ required to receive what is meant to be a ‘prestigious’ Blue Flag.<br/>Preseli Pembrokeshire was polluted by sewage 7,659 times in 2023, lasting 91,401 hours - that's 10.58 years!<br/>Monitoring was disabled in some locations, so even more sewage could have found its way into our waters last year.<br/>Kate Evans of Planet CIC - one of the organisers of the protest, said: “The event was great - we were really pleased with the turn out.”<br/>Surfers Against Sewage has also created the ‘End Sewage Pollution Manifesto’ which has five very clear, key solutions to end sewage pollution and will be pushing the next Government to adopt their demands and give them their full backing.<br/><br/>Pic: Peter Bounds<br/>Video: Planet CIC")
